3 Indicators That Fiber Cabling is Right For Your Application

Fiber Cabling

Unsure if fiber cabling is right for your specific application? These qualifiers may help you determine what your needs are.

As time goes on, the price of fiber cabling goes down and the need for bandwidth goes up. This has lead to more and more ICT professionals wondering whether or not it’s time for them to upgrade some facilities to fiber optic cabling instead of their traditional copper. However, it all depends on your applications and what you need out of your system. Today, we’re going to look at three considerations that may influence whether or not fiber cabling is right for you and your needs.

1. Different Use Cases

What are you using the cables for? Do you need cables that run outdoors or between buildings? Is wireless an important feature for you? Different kinds of facilities have different needs, so it’s important to tally up the number of connections you’re working with, what those cables are all going to be used for, and whether or not fiber can be beneficial. Fiber just makes sense if you’re running cables throughout multiple buildings or across long distances. These days, most corporate facilities can massively benefit from fiber, for example.

2. New Projects vs. Renovations

In a building that already has existing copper systems, it may be difficult to justify the cost of upgrading whether or not to use fiber. If you’re using cables over large distances, it may actually become more cost effective to upgrade to fiber even though you already have copper installed. Most new projects can benefit from fiber cabling, however. For any project that has long-term installation needs in mind, fiber cabling is bound to outlast copper and is an appropriate replacement.

3. Amount of Users

There’s a reason the large tech titans were quick to adopt fiber and it’s because the number of employees they had, the number of devices they used, and the bandwidth they required all relied on fiber to work. However, that need has now hit university campuses, hotels, and other corporate offices because they all have so many users. A large number of users means having the infrastructure in place to properly service them all.
