4 Ways Access Control Systems Can Make Schools Safer

Access Control Systems

Access control systems may be a simple means of improving school security.

Access control systems are any security systems that limit access to certain places within a building, whether that be through keypad, keycard access, biometrics or a combination of all three. As a security measure, access control has been widely adopted by commercial facilities, hospitals and government buildings, but schools have been slower to take advantage of the technology. In a time where school security and student safety is a number one priority for many of us, it’s important to take a look at all of the options available, including access control systems.

1. Locking Down a Building

Got an emergency alert from local authorities to lock down the school? In these instances, teachers must scramble to lock doors all while trying to keep an eye on their students. With a centralized access control system, you could lock down each and every classroom with the click of a button—allowing teachers to prioritize the safety of their students.

2. Take Advantage of Access Cards

Physical keys offer a number of drawbacks despite seemingly being a great way of securing a building. For one, they’re difficult to track and easy to duplicate, making it easy for intruders to take advantage. Additionally, you’re forced to choose between reusing the same keys for multiple doors—a risk in itself—or just accepting that some staff are going to have to carry around huge keychains. Access cards circumvent all of these problems, all in a lightweight, compact card that can be reprogrammed at the drop of a hat.

3. CCTV Integration

As beneficial as access control systems may be for schools, they aren’t a catch-all solution. Ideally, they should be interfaced alongside commercial CCTV systems to help keep an eye on anything that happens. This is especially useful in a school where incidents with students are bound to happen, but it has its uses in emergency scenarios as well.

4. Useful Data

Access control systems can be set up to provide you with details that could be useful—whose card was used where and when, for instance. Knowing these details can be incredibly useful when trying to determine who breached your security measures and is a useful failsafe system that many schools are in need of.
