3 Technologies That Can Improve School Security

School Security

Implementing the right technologies can be massively beneficial to school security.

In recent years, the national conversation on security within schools has sparked a lot of heated exchanges. There are debates over whether things like banning specific weapons, installing metal detectors, or having armed police officers within school buildings can help keep students safe. While these solutions all may have some merit, there are plenty of other routes to go that are less acknowledged in the public sphere. Today, we want to look at three non-intrusive technology solutions that may be major assets when improving the security of schools.

1. Access Control Systems

Access control systems enable facilities to create different zones, where only those with the appropriate credentials are granted access. In schools, this often comes in the form of key cards that are swiped through card readers. In the event of an emergency, this could allow educators to get students to a safe area using their credentials. This system could also be used to lock down portions of a building, aiding emergency responders in quarantining a specific part of the facility so that a problem doesn’t spread.

2. Improved CCTV Systems

Most schools have some kind of CCTV system in place but it’s typical that these systems are dated and rely on things like physical hard drives to keep all of that footage around in case it is ever needed. Cloud surveillance, on the other hand, allows operators to accurately review a specific incident or monitor security in real-time in the event that there’s an emergency scenario. For example, if law enforcement wanted real-time views of the inside of a school building, a cloud system would allow this whereas older legacy systems would require them to actually physically access the computer that the system would be hooked up to.

3. Better Communication Tech

These days, more classrooms than ever are being outfitted with two-way communication systems that can be used to initiate emergency protocols or even just to reach administrative officials. There are compact panic buttons that can send out a school-wide alert within mere seconds, which then allows security staff to assess the situation and determine what threats there may be.
