How the Internet of Things Relates to Fiber Optic Development

Fiber Optic

While the Internet of Things has relatively small data needs, it could still be a major driver in fiber optic development.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a general concept that involves taking simple devices and making them internet connected and smart. This lets technologies interact with networked devices, allowing you to communicate with your lights or thermostat in new, exciting ways. Everything from smart appliances to outside home sensors encompassed by the Internet of Things concept, but part of making those technologies possible is better networking capabilities mostly made possible through the use of fiber optic cables.

Additional Bandwidth

Every IoT device sends some small amount of data, which on its own might not be much of a burden for the average home network. However, this combined with increasing needs for 4K streaming, video conferencing, and cloud-based storage really drives the need for higher bandwidth capabilities. Video monitors are even heading toward 8K, requiring even more bandwidth,  While these other technologies might have more stringent bandwidth requirements, buildings upgrading their networking systems also makes the use of even more IoT devices possible.

Uses Outside of Homes

We tend to associate IoT with home internet use, making our homes and daily lives all that much smarter. The reality is, manufacturing and supply chains are going to benefit from the Internet of Things just as much as homeowners will. Thanks to the advantages of fiber optic systems, machines will be able to be controlled remotely, enabling more automated work to be done.

The Future of IoT

Adoption of IoT devices may take some time to be widespread, but some like Gartner believe that homes could contain hundreds of smart objects by 2022. It’s certainly a competitive marketplace, and as more and more businesses realize the potential for IoT devices to increase efficiency in their facilities, we’re likely to see more of this technology being adopted.
