  1. Long Beach, California was the first U.S. city to send telephone traffic through fiber optic cabling in 1977. The telephone traffic was sent through first-generation fiber optics at 6 Mbit/s.
  2. In 2011, 19.2 million miles of fiber optic cabling was installed in homes in the United States alone. That’s enough to wrap around the world 772 times!
  3. By 2012, 21.3 million North American homes had fiber-to-the-home services, which is more than double the number of homes in Texas!
  4. Fiber optic cabling in the home adds an estimated $5,000 to a home’s value.
  5. The largest, privately-owned fiber optic network in the world is being built in Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It will connect 265 buildings and 13,000 computer network ports!
  6. Verizon is the nation’s largest fiber-to-the-home service provider. As of 2013, Verizon has wired around 18 million homes with fiber technology!
  7. In China, all new residences must be wired with fiber technology.
