Structured Cabling: The Basics

Structured-CablingWhile structured cabling is a service that we provide at FiberPlus, many of our potential customers don’t understand what the service entails.

Structured cabling systems are complete systems that include both cabling and other hardware that can provide a telecommunication infrastructure. The infrastructure provided by the structured cabling system can provide a number of different uses including computer network support and telephone service.

It is important to note that not every structured cabling system is made the same. Each system is created uniquely because of changes in the following based on the customer:

  • Needs of the customer
  • Warranties offered by manufacturers
  • Structure of the building
  • Products used for connections and cables
  • The intended function of the system
  • Equipment supported by the system
  • Existing system configurations

Businesses considering a structured cabling system can expect the following benefits:

  • Uniformed documentation
  • Installation and design consistencies
  • Line requirement conformance for both transmission and physical lines
  • A base for system expansion if needed

Structured cabling can help support the following types of systems including:

  • Voice and Data
  • Wireless
  • Outside Plant
  • PA/Paging
  • Data Center
  • CATV
  • Passive Optical Networks
  • Distributed Antenna

A structured cabling system tends to be defined based on the type and terms of the system ownership. A system will start where a service provider terminates, known as the Network Interface Device. The three types of systems that are found are:

  1. Local Area Network
  2. Metropolitan Area Network
  3. Wide Area Network

FiberPlus has been providing data communication services for a number of different markets through fiber optics since 1992. What began as a cable installation company for Local Area Networks has grown into a top telecommunications business that can provide the Richmond, VA, Baltimore, MD, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia areas with a number of different services. These services now include:

  • Structured Cabling
  • Electronic Security Systems
  • Distributed Antenna Systems
  • Audio/Visual Services
  • Support Services
  • Specialty Systems
  • Design/Build Services

FiberPlus promises the communities in which we serve that we will continue to expand and evolve as new technology is introduced within the telecommunications industry.
