Are Your Communications Cables a Fire Hazard?

When tested in a Steiner Tunnel, the counterfeit cables went up in flames almost immediately.

Did you know that communications cables can pose a fire hazard? They can if they’re counterfeit.

The Communications Cable and Connectivity Association (CCCA) recently released a video where both a compliant cable and a counterfeit cable are tested in a Steiner Tunnel, which is designed to safely test for flame-spread and smoke-generation requirements. Unsurprisingly, the compliant cable kept flames contained to the bottom of the cable, while the counterfeit cable allowed flames to quickly spread along the entire length of the cable. This just proves the extreme importance of purchasing cable that is compliant with all safety standards. Otherwise, you could be unwittingly installing a giant fuse that will encourage a flame to travel throughout a home or facility.

How to Tell If Communications Cables are Compliant

There are performance standards and safety codes set by the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) that all compliant cables must follow. The biggest problem with trying to purchase compliant communications cables is that many counterfeit cables come with all the safety and compliance labels that you’d expect to see on compliant cables. This can make purchasing the right communications cables confusing and may cause installers to fall victim to counterfeit cables, especially since these counterfeit cables are available on the open market just like complaint cables.

The key label to look for is the holographic UL label. While counterfeit cables will have a UL label–which is meant to show that the cables have been UL tested and certified–only compliant cables that have UL certification will have the holographic UL label. Carefully looking for this particular label before making a purchase can make all the difference when it comes to safe cable installations.
