Physical IT Security Measures: Part 1

Security

Proper IT security includes comprehensive physical measurements.

It may be easy to place all of your trust in your network’s software security measures, but the reality is that IT security begins at the physical level. Your company simply cannot overlook the importance of the physical aspect of security. It is critical that components be protected in order to protect your assets and potentially sensitive information. Here are some of our tips on essential security measures you should be implementing if you want a comprehensive security system.

Keeping Your Server Room Secure

Any time your server room isn’t in use, it should remain locked. As the core of your network, unwanted access to your server room could lead to potentially massive amounts of damage to your company. Make sure that your policies set who has access to the server room and state outright that if those authorized individuals aren’t in the server room, it should remain locked. It’s also wise to minimize the number of windows and doors your server room has, as it will help you be able to limit and monitor access even closer.

Security Surveillance

While you may already have policies in place regarding who is allowed access to your server room, this does you no good if you have no way of monitoring who is entering and exiting the space. The best solution is to build in an authentication system into your actual locks–this means using unique, trackable key codes for each employee, smart cards, or biometric scans. You may also want to set up a security camera in a location that would make it difficult to find, tamper with, or disable.
