3 Practical School Security Measures That Can Be Put in Place Today

School Security

There are a few school security measures that can easily be implemented right now.

School security has become a hot topic for debate—in light of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, March for Our Lives is a large movement that has sparked a national debate on gun ownership and usage. Whatever side of the conversation you may fall on, there’s a call for more security measures to be implemented immediately. Thankfully, there are three technologies that can be implemented right now, by schools, to help improve security and help appease educators, parents, and students alike.

1. Modern CCTV Systems

Many schools already have CCTV systems in place, but a current, modern surveillance system is critical. Being able to monitor all access areas to the building at one time allows us to have a better understanding of the security of a school. Additionally, cloud storage allows for accurately determining the details of an incident, a vital process in preventing future incidents from happening and in investigating what may have happened for legal purposes. IP based surveillance also allows for the “network access” by law enforcement if properly configured.  If you still have the older coaxial cameras, you probably suffer from poor images and an expensive infrastructure to maintain.

2. Access Control

Utilizing access control systems allows educators to grant access to certain areas of the building to certain people. In order to gain access, you must first present some form of credentials such as a key card. Multifactor authentication, which requires more than one kind of credential like a physical card as well as an access code or biometric reading, can make access control even safer. These systems are effective means of cutting off access to doors that may not be monitored but are nonetheless essential to security.  Video intercom technology can marry access to the school campus with main offices to ensure only authorized teachers and students can gain ready access.

3. Contemporary Communication Technology

Installing two-way communications systems allows those in the classroom to quickly initiate emergency protocols or reach administration and security. Compact personal panic buttons are capable of sending school-wise alerts within seconds, allowing security staff members to address a CCTV system and determine where and to what extent the threat exists. They can also “lock down” classrooms, allowing students and teachers to shelter in place safely.
