FiberPlus Installs New Fiber Optic Technology

A new multimillion dollar Health Science Building at a local college boasts one of the first Passive Optical Networks (PONs) in this area. It was the first installation of this new and promising technology by Fiber Plus as well. The College is so pleased with the technology that it is planning on using PONs in future buildings.

PONs has some distinct advantages over the traditional fiber optic network. A major advantage is that each fiber strand installed by Fiber Plus can serve up to 4 users, dramatically reducing the cost and complexity of the fiber cabling. Switching of the data streams is accomplished by optical splitters, eliminating the need for electrically powered switching equipment.
