The How and Why of Distributed Antenna Systems

Distributed Antenna Systems

Distributed antenna systems have a huge swath of benefits for a variety of applications.

Distributed antenna systems (DAS) are a widely utilized and massively beneficial technology, but not everyone knows what they actually are. A distributed antenna system is a network consisting of spatially separated antenna nodes that are connected to a common source, which in turn provides wireless service to an area. The difference between distributed antenna systems and single antenna systems is that a DAS can offer an equal amount of coverage, but benefits from more efficient power usage and better reliability. Applications range from enhancing poor cellular signals to the very important “first responder” public safety networks.

As a WiFi Distribution System

In some instances, especially for larger commercial bodies and facilities with specific needs, distributed antenna systems are used to create a WiFi network. This is in contrast to a traditional modem and router system, but on a large enough scale, using a DAS still makes sense due to their reliability and low-maintenance requirements. There are also cases where distributed antenna systems can be deployed to areas where traditional WiFi systems wouldn’t work—such as underground zones like subway systems where a typical WiFi system may not be practical.

Ensuring the Public Safety

There are plenty of buildings where radio or cell reception isn’t just a luxury but a necessity for day-to-day operations. In a commercial facility, hospital, or school, communication is critical especially in the case of emergency scenarios where public safety becomes important. Distributed antenna systems work for these kinds of industries because they’re customizable to fit specific needs. If you’ve dealt with poor coverage in the past, you’re already aware of how frustrating it is to have your wireless network fail on you when you need it—which is why distributed antenna systems are coveted as an effective solution.
